Where: 1800 N.E. 2nd Ave, Miami, FL
Description: Voted by Miami New Times in 2008 as the "BEST PLACE TO EAT IN PEACE", the Miami City Cemetery is a "historical haven filled with palm tree sand stately grave markers that date as far back as the turn of the 20th Century. Built in 1887, one year after the city was incorporated; the cemetery holds the likes of Julia Tuttle (the mother of Miami) and Lawson Thomas (the first black judge in the South since Reconstruction). The Burdines department store family has a stately granite crypt, and the Art Deco touches on some graves are stunningly gorgeous". Judge Scott Silverman is the Court's historian and has a cool tour planned of the cemetery, for those of you who dare to join. Judge Silverman will take our group on a walk around the Miami Cemetery. We will see the unmarked grave of Clarence Dally who stands as the only white man to be legally executed in Dade County; and he will show us the location of the grave of the last man to be executed in Dade County, Clarence McKinney. The graves and headstones of some of South Florida's judiciary members will be viewed and discussed. Additionally, Judge Silverman will take those attending to visit the only surviving remnant of the 1904 Dade County Courthouse at the cemetery's confederate circle.
