Hundreds of members of the legal profession will come together to recognize the accomplishments of three dedicated public servants from the Miami-Dade community at the 27th Annual Judicial Reception, hosted by the Attorneys’ Division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. Chaired this year byJeffrey B. Kaplan along with Vice Chair Dennis G. Kainen, the popular event will take place on Tuesday, March 22 at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Miami Downtown, 1601 Biscayne Boulevard.
Members of the Attorneys’ Division will pay tribute to Judge Lester Langer, Judge Peter R. Palermo and attorney Cesar L. Alvarez.
Langer is a Circuit Judge and domestic violence expert who has presided over the County Court’s Domestic Violence Division, has lectured at various Miami-Dade institutions and is on the boards of numerous social-service organizations. He will be presented with the 2011 Community Service Award for his devotion to the community and his work to bring positive attention to the court systems through leadership, scholarship and public service.
Palermo, a decorated war veteran, the first United States Magistrate Judge and the first Mayor of West Miami, will receive the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional work as a public servant, his commitment to establishing and growing the Magistrate Judge system, and for being one of the longest-serving judges in the United States.
The third award — the Honorable Theodore “Ted” Klein Special Recognition Award — honors an individual who has had a profound impact on individuals in the legal community. The late Judge Klein personified the finest qualities of the legal profession on the bench, as an attorney and in his relationships with others. This year, the Ted Klein Award will be given to Cesar L. Alvarez, a committed philanthropist, attorney and ardent advocate for education. Alvarez has shown tireless commitment to community service, using his mastery of the law and dedication to charity to improve the Jewish and general Miami-Dade communities.
