ANNUAL BREAKING THE GLASS CEILING AWARDS to honor Jacqueline Hodes of McDermott Will & Emery

Jacqueline Hodes is among the few female attorneys in prominent ranks in the private equity and mergers and acquisitions arena. She is currently a partner at the firm of McDermott Will & Emery, and she was the youngest associate promoted to partner within her firm. On average, women represent only15% of the partners at the largest law firms in the country, but the number of women who are merger and acquisitions attorneys is only 7%, and those who run private equity transactions are almost non-existent. This is largely due to the challenges women face when they choose to practice in this space, which often leads to them opting out of this type of law, or sometimes even opting out of practicing law at all. Anecdotally, less than 2% of the decision makers at private equity firms are women. She has been recognized and featured in Chambers USA as one of the leading lawyers in her field. In addition, she was honored for her unwavering efforts in assisting Holocaust survivors seeking reparations from the German government, both locally and nationally. Jackie serves as a mentor to summer interns and new associates and she is active in numerous Jewish, professional and community organizations. She continues to strive to achieve more, accomplish more and pave the way for other young Jewish women to join her in succeeding.

The Jewish Museum of Florida announced the winners of the annual "Breaking the Glass Ceiling Awards" for six inspiring women who have been successful in fields generally dominated by men. The Award Reception and Ceremony will feature presentations made by the honorees describing the obstacles and inspirations they encountered on their individual journeys to success. The event will take place at the Museum on Thursday, March 24, 2011 beginning with a light dessert reception at 7:30 pm. The cost for Museum members is $15; non-members $20. For reservations, call 305-672-5044, ext. 3175 or info@jewishmuseum.com

Hundreds of members of the legal profession will come together to recognize the accomplishments of three dedicated public servants from the Miami-Dade community at the 27th Annual Judicial Reception, hosted by the Attorneys’ Division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. Chaired this year byJeffrey B. Kaplan along with Vice Chair Dennis G. Kainen, the popular event will take place on Tuesday, March 22 at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Miami Downtown, 1601 Biscayne Boulevard.
Members of the Attorneys’ Division will pay tribute to Judge Lester Langer, Judge Peter R. Palermo and attorney Cesar L. Alvarez.
Langer is a Circuit Judge and domestic violence expert who has presided over the County Court’s Domestic Violence Division, has lectured at various Miami-Dade institutions and is on the boards of numerous social-service organizations. He will be presented with the 2011 Community Service Award for his devotion to the community and his work to bring positive attention to the court systems through leadership, scholarship and public service.
Palermo, a decorated war veteran, the first United States Magistrate Judge and the first Mayor of West Miami, will receive the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional work as a public servant, his commitment to establishing and growing the Magistrate Judge system, and for being one of the longest-serving judges in the United States.
The third award — the Honorable Theodore “Ted” Klein Special Recognition Award — honors an individual who has had a profound impact on individuals in the legal community. The late Judge Klein personified the finest qualities of the legal profession on the bench, as an attorney and in his relationships with others. This year, the Ted Klein Award will be given to Cesar L. Alvarez, a committed philanthropist, attorney and ardent advocate for education. Alvarez has shown tireless commitment to community service, using his mastery of the law and dedication to charity to improve the Jewish and general Miami-Dade communities.
The Attorneys’ Division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation is chaired by Sidney M. Pertnoy.
