Perez and Wahid Speak to Association of Pakistani Physicians about Criminal and Civil Liability

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.; November 21, 2011 — Elizabeth Perez, Of Counsel, with the Fort Lauderdale office of the statewide law firm Broad and Cassel, and Khurrum Wahid of Wahid Vizcaino LLP recently addressed the South Florida Chapter of the Association of Pakistani Physicians on “Hot Topics on Criminal and Civil Liability for Physicians.” They spoke at the organization’s annual meeting and CME program.

Their presentation included information physicians can use to ensure their practices are in compliance with today’s complex health care laws. They discussed recent developments in the laws regarding South Florida’s “pill mills” and heightened law enforcement measures related to Medicare and Medicaid billing practices. Perez focused on physician’s due process rights in civil and administrative procedures, while Wahid spoke about the prevention of criminal liability and the importance of having a compliance program.

Perez has spent the last nearly 12 years working in criminal law, litigation and health care. She has been involved in major litigation and arbitration matters, including representing health care providers in multi-million dollar disputes. She earned her bachelor’s and Juris Doctorate degrees from Florida State University and is a two-time recipient of the South Florida Legal Guide “Top Up and Comer.”

Wahid is the founding partner of Wahid, Vizcaino, LLP, a criminal and civil litigation firm with offices in Manhattan, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
