TEW CARDENAS LLP PARTNER DEXTER LEHTINEN APPOINTED TO STATEWIDE JUDICIAL NOMINATING COMMISSION

MIAMI (April 28, 2011) – Tew Cardenas LLP partner Dexter Lehtinen has been appointed by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and new Sen. Marco Rubio to serve as a member of the Florida Judicial Nomination Commission for the Southern District of Florida. The statewide panel is charged with recommending nominees for federal judgeships, U.S. attorneys and U.S. marshals. This is Lehtinen’s second time serving on the commission.

The 64-member Florida Judicial Nomination Commission recommends the candidates to Florida’s U.S. senators to interview and forward to the White House. The Commission is divided into three geographic conferences representative of each judicial district, including the Southern District, Middle District and Northern District of Florida.

A former United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and Florida Representative and State Senator, Lehtinen focuses his practice at Tew Cardenas on commercial and environmental litigation and white-collar criminal defense.

He assists the Miami-based law firm in representing individuals and corporations in local, state and federal civil and criminal investigations and related litigation with an emphasis on financial, accounting and tax fraud. This includes criminal investigations and related litigation arising out of corporate and bank failures, securities, and RICO and customs violations.

Prior to joining Tew Cardenas, Lehtinen was the founding and managing partner of the law firm of Lehtinen Riedi Brooks Moncarz, P.A. in Miami through which he served as the general counsel for the Miccosukee Tribe. He has extensive and diverse litigation experience, having argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and Florida Supreme Court, as well as scores of civil cases in both state and federal trial and appellate courts. He also has a great deal of experience in administrative/regulatory, environmental and federal Indian law matters. Earlier in his career, he tried cases as a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and Miami.

Lehtinen’s professional, civic and community commitments include the Federal Judicial Bar and Community Liaison Committee. He has previously served on the Florida Commission on Money Laundering; South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force; Governor’s Commission on the Everglades; and the Governor’s Commission on a Sustainable South Florida. A decorated war veteran, Lehtinen received a purple heart in 1971 for his service in the Vietnam War.

Lehtinen received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and earned a Master’s and an MBA from Columbia University. He received his Juris Doctorate from Stanford Law School, finishing first in his class.
